Single Rotary Tablet Press – Its Working, Benefits, Uses

The single rotary tablet press machine is highly compatible and widely utilized in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, medicines, nutraceuticals, industrial pellets, and cosmetics. It is intended for small-batch tablet manufacturing. These machines produce tablets in the right shape, weight, and size. A tablet press, also known as a pill press machine, compresses powder or granules into solid tablets. The machine has a single rotating turret and a set of punches and dies. In this article, you will know about these tablet press machines, their working, uses, and more.

Working of a Single Rotary Tablet Press

The working of a single rotary tablet press is very simple. The main job of this machine is to convert powder or granules into solid tablets. The tablet press machine operates on the basis of hydraulic pressure. This pressure is transferred without reduction through the static fluid.  Any external pressure is transferred in the same proportion to all directions through static fluid. It also allows you to multiply the force as needed.

Below is the step-by-step explanation of its working process:

  • First, the powder or granules are fed into the hopper, which is located at the top of the machine. The hopper transfers material into the dies.
  • Once the tablet press is turned on, the turret starts rotating. The turret features a set of dies and punches. During rotation, powder is filled into the empty dies from the hopper.
  • The next step is removing extra powder from the machine. At this point, the needed weight (volume) of granules to be crushed into tablets is determined by the height of the bottom punch in the die, which is regulated by the metering cam.
  •  To achieve the desired weight of granules in the punch-die cavity, the lower punch is lifted to the appropriate level in the die. The surplus grains are scraped from the surface of the die table.
  • After filling, the die moves forward to the compression zone. Here, both upper and lower punches come together.
  • The upper punch moves downward while the lower punch moves upward. The powder inside the die gets compressed under high pressure and forms a solid tablet. The machine’s compression rollers apply pressure to make tablets strong.
  • Next, powder particles bind together and take the shape of dies and punches.
  • Once compression is complete, the upper punch moves back up. The pressure is released, but the tablet remains in solid form inside the die.
  • The tablet is removed from the bottom punch-die station. During this stage, the top punch retracts from the die cavity and rises over the turret table. The bottom punch rises in the die, pushing the tablet upward and out of the die cavity. The pills are then gathered into the container using a scraper.
