A Beginner’s Guide to Capacitance & Tan Delta Test Kit

Insulation testing is performed in different industries, like power plants. The capacitance and tan delta test is used to analyze the condition of insulation in products such as transformers, motors, and generators. You can use a capacitance & tan delta test kit to perform this test. In this blog, you will learn what this kit is, how it works, and the benefits of this testing kit.

What is a Capacitance & Tan Delta Test?

When a pure insulator is linked across a line and the ground, it functions like a capacitor. In a perfect insulator, because the insulating material, which also functions as a dielectric, is 100% pure, the electric current passing through the insulator is purely capacitive.

There is no resistive component to the current going from line to ground through the insulator since the perfect insulating material has no impurities.

In a pure capacitor, the capacitive electric current leads the applied voltage by 90 degrees.

In practice, the insulator cannot be produced completely pure. Impurities like dirt and moisture penetrate insulators as they age. These impurities offer a conductive channel for the electricity.  As a result, the leakage electric current flowing from the line ground via the insulator contains a resistance component.

As a result, it goes without saying that in a good insulator, the resistive component of leakage electric current is relatively low. In other words, the health of an electrical insulator may be measured by the ratio of resistive to capacitive components. For a good insulator, this ratio would be quite low. The ratio is frequently referred to as tanδ or tan delta. It is sometimes referred to as the dissipation factor.

There are two methods for predicting the state of an insulation system during a tan delta or dissipation factor test. The first step is to compare the findings of prior testing to assess whether the insulation has deteriorated owing to aging.

The second method involves directly assessing insulation status based on tanδ values. There is no obligation to compare prior findings of the tan delta test.

If the insulation is ideal, the loss factor will be nearly the same over the whole range of test voltage. However, if the insulation is inadequate, the value of tan delta rises as the test voltage increases.

Why Is This Test Important?

You can detect insulation breakdown using this capacitance & tan delta test kit before it leads to costly damage. Also, this kit can be used to protect systems from electrical hazards. This test increases the reliability of power components. The tan delta test is designed to ensure that the transformer continues to perform safely and reliably.  The computation of the dissipation factor and capacitance values offers information about the insulation behavior of bushings and windings.

Variation in capacitance value, for example, implies partial bushing failures and automatic winding movement.  Insulation deficiency, equipment age, and increased energy levels all contribute to heat generation.  The dissipation factor is used to calculate the amount of loss in these systems.
